Neurodiversity and females – paths ending in different places

This article written by Amanda Kirby supports my belive that the earlier the diagnosis, the better the person with the condition will benefit from information, as going to life without a proper diagnosis could lead to depression and mental health problems.

5 things we CAN do

1. Consider the 3Ms – who is missing, misunderstood, or has been misdiagnosed.

2. If you are a clinician and things are not improving.. go back to the drawing board and take the history again. The art of history taking never goes out of fashion!

3. Recognise that females and males may present differently with their pattern of neurodivergent traits. Hormones can make a difference in timing, and presentation too.

4. We do need more interdisciplinary training for the gatekeepers to diagnosis and support- GPs, Psychiatrists, teachers, and social workers about neurodiversity and adversity.

5. Remember, not everyone has challenges (or strengths) that fit into neat diagnostic categories or boxes. Mental health and neurodivergent traits overlap… as do some physical challenges ….We are messy!
